The Family of William Green Hatten and Sarah Anne Turner Day

Rear-Admiral Sir William Evelyn Hatten Jolly (1887-1961), son of Robert William Jolly and Alice Maria Hatten, taking the salute at the march-past of 260 members of the British Legion in Sudbury, Suffolk, on 15 Jul 1948, picture found in the British Newspaper Archives by Robin Pearl.

The purpose of this small web-site is to share the family pictures I've inherited myself or received from other members of my extended family. I still need information on many of the people pictured. For my complete family tree, see here.

Revised: 17 December, 2023

William Green Hatten (1828-74), the son of Robert Hayward Hatten and his first wife Mary Green, married Sarah Anne Turner Day (1832-1919) at Walsham-le-Willows, Suffolk, in 1862. They had six children: Ellen Sarah (1855-1940); Mary Emilia (1857-1937); Alice Maria (1860-1947); Elizabeth Day (1862-1940); Robert (born 1865) and Minnie Emmaretta (1866-1951).

Ellen Sarah Hatten did not marry, she was still living at home with her widowed mother, who was now a farmer in her own right, in Walsham-le-Willows in 1911.

Mary Emilia Hatten married William Thomas Morgan Day, who was the son of Edward Bedwell Day and Lucy Elizabeth Bevans and may have been her first cousin, in 1885, and they had one child that I know of, Henry Edward William Hatten Day (1898-1981), who married Edith Parker in 1928 and had a son in 1934.

Alice Maria Hatten married Robert William Jolly  in Walsham-le-Willows, Suffolk, on 6 Sep 1883 and had seven children: Robert Henry Hatten Jolly (1884-1968), Gertrude Alice (1886-1972), William Evelyn Hatten Jolly (1887-1961), Gladys May (1889-1992), Thirza Blanche (1892-1974), Dorothy Maria (1893-1978) and Winifred Eileen (1898-1956). Thirza Blanche Jolly married Edmund B Griffiths in 1931 and had two children, but in 1939 she was living with her sister Gertrude Alice in Harrow, Middlesex, and listed as divorced. She had renamed herself "Theresa"! Robert Henry Hatten Jolly followed his father into medicine and in 1939 was Medical Officer of Health for Wolverhampton. William Evelyn Hatten Jolly joined the Royal Navy and served throughout both World War I and World War II, ending up as Rear Admiral Sir William Evelyn Hatten Jolly, KCB, RN, knighted in 1944!

The Rev. Jean Lainé Le Pelley (1840-1914), who married Emmaretta Louisa Hatten in 1868, officiated at the 1883 wedding of Alice Maria Hatten to Robert William Jolly. Emmaretta was Alice's first cousin, once removed, and the sister of Rev. Charles William Hatten, see here.

Elizabeth Day Hatten married Arthur Mills (1858-1931) in 1899 and had four children: Kathleen Elizabeth Hatten (1892-1975), Seymour Herbert Hatten (1894-1970), Norah Mary Hatten (1897-1945) and Ellen Doreen Hatten (1899-1969).

I have no information about Robert Hatten born 1865 after 1881, when he was a visitor at Berghersh House in Witnesham, Suffok, the home of his uncle George Nelson Hatten!

William and Sarah Anne's last child, Minnie Emmaretta Hatten, married Spencer Symonds in 1891 and had five children: George Raymond Hatten (1892-1933), William Harry (1894-1915 - killed in action at Ypres), Spencer Leslie Hatten (1892-1915 - also killed in action at Ypres), Herbert Eric Hatten (1899-1985) and Margaret Evelyn Joy (born 1906). George Raymond Hatten Symonds served throughout Word War 1 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Suffolk Yeomanry, but died in 1933 at the age of 40, as far as I know without marrying. Herbert Eric Hatten Symonds married Mary Chapman in 1931, and had four children between 1933 and 1942. Margaret Evelyn Joy Symonds, known as Joy, married Matthew Parrington in 1928, but as far as I know they had no children.

Apart from the photo of Sir William Evelyn Hatten Jolly above and Sarah Anne Hatten with Harriet Griffin Hatten below, I have no pictures of this branch of the Hatten family.

Sarah Anne Turner Hatten née Day (1832-1919), widow of William Green Hatten (1828-74) and Harriet Griffin Blomfield Hatten (for more about her family, see here)
