Ada Jarrett's Photo Album, USA and Canada, 9 Apr 1952 - 18 Jun 1952

Page 2 of the photo album (inside front cover), with postcard of RMS "Franconia"

My eldest aunt, Ada Fraser, was born in Liverpool in 1889, eldest daughter of James Wren Fraser and Mary Sargeant. She married Richard Cecil Jarrett, born 1886, in Liverpool in 1910, but was unfortunately widowed in 1912 when Richard died of septicaemia after a knife accident at his butcher's shop. Their daughter Alice Margaret Jarrett was born in 1911 and married William Leslie Gelder in 1939. Alice was the mother of Richard Dennis "Danny" Gelder, who owns this photo album. Ada never remarried and undertook a long and successful career in nursing from World War 1 onwards. She died in Liverpool in 1970.

For my complete family tree, see here.

Pages 2-3 (inside front cover)

Ada undertook this trip of a lifetime to the USA and Canada, visiting her relatives in Buffalo, NY, and Chicago, IL, at the age of 63 after she'd retired from nursing. This photo album was presented to Ada by her brother Frank Fraser, who lived in Chicago. Frank probably met her in New York on 9 Apr 1952 and took all the photographs in the album, which is also a scrapbook with postcards and other memorabilia. The captions in white ink are by Ada.

The Bill in the picture above left does not look like the same man as the Bill in the picture above right, who is definitely William Lenz, husband of Ruth and father of the Nancy Diane whose name graces the boat. He is almost certainly Myrtle's first husband Willard Vincent Knight - they married in 1951 but he died in 1956 and she married Harold Erskine Shaw in 1959, or William Paine, owner of Lake Cottage and the boat. Thanks to Nancy for the later Koontz Lake photo and to Darlene for her parents' wedding photo.

Thomas Henry Hall - from River Forest High School, Oak Park, IL, 1948 Yearbook, picture from Ancestry found by Judith Dolanski

Ada's invitation to the wedding of Patti Kathleen Domville, daughter of Mrs. Millington Domville, and Thomas Henry Hall, Chicago, 27 May 1952.

Although these Chicagoans are not our relatives, Judith Dolanski has discovered something about them. Alfred Edward Domville (born Belfast, Ireland, 14 Sep 1863) and Emily Fanny Millington (born Tipton, Staffordshire, 10 Mar 1877) married in Buffalo, NY, 1911. They had a daughter Millington Kathleen (Milly) born 4 Oct 1908 in Berwick, PA. Milly in turn had a daughter Patti Kathleen, born 28 Jul 1931 at 6 Lorne Road, Waterloo, Liverpool, Lancs. Patti's birth name was actually Kathleen Patricia Nuttall, and her birth was registered in West Derby for Sept quarter 1931. Her parents are listed as James William Nuttall and Milly Nuttall née Domville. James William Nuttall had married Milly Kathleen Domville in Cook County, Illinois, on 20 Sep 1930. Back in 1911 James aged 7 was living at 19 Royton Road, Waterloo, Liverpool, with his parents Thomas and Laura Nuttall, but his birthplace was given as the USA, as was that of his younger sister Grace aged 6 (he was actually born in Rochester, Michigan, on 23 Dec 1903). James and Milly moved back to Waterloo, where Kathleen Patricia (Patti) was born in 1931, but Milly and Patti aged 5 returned finally to the USA in 1937, both now using the name Domville. Thanks to Patti's son Thomas Hall for information that James moved to South Africa.

Milly and Patti Domville/Nuttall must have been acquainted with Ada in Waterloo at some point. As Ada was a district midwife in Liverpool in the 1930s, my guess is that she delivered Patti and befriended Milly, and her planned trip to Chicago may even have been timed to attend Patti's wedding. Ada actually had a clinic in Lorne Road, Waterloo.

Patti and Thomas Henry Hall met at the Art Institute in Chicago and settled in Mesa, Arizona, after their honeymoon, later moving to Seal Beach, Orange County, CA. (For a picture of the Art Institute, see page 11 above.) Thomas Henry Hall was a sales representative for a sporting goods company. Patti Domville Hall had a son, also called Thomas Hall, in 1956, who has now been in touch. Patti and Thomas spent a great deal of time and resources trying to find the wreckage of a USAAF B-26 bomber that was shot down by Japanese gunfire over Papua New Guinea on 10 May 1942, killing the crew including her uncle, co-pilot Lt. Thomas C Domville, who was born in Michigan in 1916. Patti made three trips to Papua New Guinea in the 1980s but as far as I know she was ultimately unable to locate the crash site. She died in Seal Beach on 11 Jul 2008 aged 76.

More information about the Domville, Millington and Nuttall families in Ireland, England and the USA would be greatly appreciated!
