Frank Fraser's Photo Album.
Chicago, IL, Nov 1938
Revised:
16 July, 2020
My eldest uncle, Francis Alexander Fraser, was born in Liverpool in 1888, son of
James Wren Fraser and Mary Sargeant. In 1909 he left Liverpool and
emigrated to the USA, arriving at Ellis Island, New York, on
25 Aug 1909 aboard the "RMS Caronia".
Frank was going to live with his aunt Martha Lunt, Mary's elder sister, who had
moved to Chicago with her husband John and family in 1888.
Frank worked for International Harvester in Chicago, but returned to Europe
during World War I to join the Royal Field Artillery and fight in France,
serving
from 1916 to 1919.
He returned to Chicago in Sep 1919 and in 1925 married Rose Bonnesen, a divorcee
born Rose Elizabeth Lehn with two daughters Bonnie and Phyllis born in 1909 and
1911. Rose is listed as his wife on Frank's application for US citizenship in
1926, but by 1930 they had separated. This was apparently because Rose's teenage
daughters would not accept Frank as their stepfather. In 1930 Rose Fraser was
living with her daughters and a son-in-law separately from Frank, and married
John Holland before 1937, because she is listed as Rose Holland, informant, on
her mother Caroline Lehn's 1937 death certificate.
Frank therefore never had children of his own. He
finally came back to the UK in 1958 and lived with sister Winifred Grimshaw -
Frank died of
a heart attack in the Essoldo Cinema, London Road, Liverpool on 19 Feb 1962. Several photos of Frank here in
his 60s show he was the spitting image of my Dad Harold at the same age! For my
complete family tree, see
here.

Shown on either side of Frank's Ellis Island arrival
certificate are both sides of a postcard of the "RMS Caronia" sent from New York
in 1909, the year Frank first arrived in the USA.
Frank returned to England on the "RMS Pannonia", arriving in
Liverpool on 8 Jul 1916. He went back to the USA on board the "SS Scotian" in
Sep 1919.
This page shows Frank Fraser's
photo album with pictures of his family and friends from the USA and UK. Frank
was born in Liverpool in 1888, lived in Chicago, Illinois, USA, from 1909 to
1958, and returned to Liverpool from 1958 until his death in 1962.

For the two photos above right taken on board the "RMS Empress

left, Judith Dolanski thinks the woman next to her may be Myrtle Stahl née
Lunt, the woman next to Frank is still unknown (see Fraser Family USA Photos
and Sargeant Album for more of Judith's Lunt/McGeachie/Fraser pictures).
Frank's aunt, Martha Lunt née Sargeant, moved to Chicago with her
family in 1888, and Frank moved there in 1909 to live with them. His album shows Frank kept in touch with the family
throughout his US stay. He also kept in regular touch with his sister,
Bertha McGeachie née Fraser, who moved to Buffalo, New York state, with her family in
1926, and whose family also appear in these photos.

notes below |
|
The couple in the
photos taken at the Field Museum of
Natural History,
Chicago, Illinois were wrongly identified as Mae
McGeachie and her husband Thomas J. Waite, but they are actually John McGeachie
and his wife Alice Marie Bosack,
confirmed by Judith Dolanski and Lori Mankowski (John's granddaughter), with
the other woman being Bertha's daughter and John's sister Georgina McGeachie.
Frank's writing on
the back of the picture between pages 13 and 14 says: "The young couple &
baby at the back on the right are Bob's grand-nephew & wife. Myrtle's husband
was ill and not in this picture. Bob's wife was taking pictures and not in
this." Judith Dolanski adds: "The couple in front on the
right is Ethel (Lunt) and Robert Ferguson, celebrating their 50th Wedding
Anniversary. Ethel is sister to my grandfather,
James Lunt, who, I think, is standing right behind Ethel. The couple in front
on the left is Florence (Ferguson) and Tom Lively, she is daughter of Ethel
and Robert. I believe the man on left, back row is Robert Ferguson, Jr., son
of Ethel and Robert. The man 2nd from left, in back row, I believe is William
Paine, who was married to Mary Jane "Mae" Lunt (she died in 1956), sister of
my grandfather, James. The woman third from left, back row, I believe is Myrtle
Mae (Ferguson) (I don't know who she married [she married Willard Vincent
Knight in 1951 and Harold Erskine Shaw in 1959 after Willard died in 1956]) daughter of Ethel and Robert. I
couldn't tell if your picture had a date on it, but mine has "Our Golden
Wedding Anniversary, March 8, 1961"." Robert Ferguson and Ethel
Lunt married in Chicago on 8 Mar 1911. Darlene Knight, daughter of Myrtle Mae
Ferguson, confirms that the three children in the
picture are her and her brothers Bill (1953-79) and Vince (1956-2016).
Page 14
All these pictures are of Denise McGeachie, the
daughter of John McGeachie and Alice Marie Bosack, taken in Buffalo, New York, USA,
around 1944. John McGeachie was a Staff Sergeant with the US Army Air Force,
846th Bomber Squadron, 489th Bomber Group, Heavy. He was killed on a bombing
raid over Villers-Saint-Paul, Oise, France on 2
Jun 1944, and is buried at Plot B Row 25 Grave 21, Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé,
France. For more of this story see Fraser Family USA. There are lots of
photos of Denise in Frank’s album, but the only online reference to her I’ve
found is in the “Class of 1961”, Maryvale High School, Cheektowaga, NY (near
Buffalo), which would make her born in 1943. Thanks to Judith Dolanski for the
information that Denise married John Thomas Mankowski (1944-1993) - these photos
of Denise have been confirmed by her daughter Lori Mankowski.
Page 15
Judith Dolanski identifies this house as 169 Fowler Avenue, Buffalo, NY, USA,
and the people in the photo as George McGeachie (top left), Marion McGeachie, Andrew
Stahl (1899-1955) at top right, his wife Myrtle Stahl née Lunt (1903-81) in
front of him, and their son Kenneth (1938-2004) next to Myrtle. This dates the
picture as around 1942, possibly the Stahls were visiting the McGeachies for
John's wedding

Niagara River, on the left. The Peace Bridge is one of the busiest
international border crossings in the world, connecting Fort Erie, Canada, to
Buffalo, NY. Canada is on the far shore."

Judith says: "My
grandfather James Lunt is standing next to Frank. Myrtle, James's sister,
has on a dark dress, with a white collar, and her husband Andrew Stahl is
standing behind her (he died 1955). Where the three women are sitting, the
one in the middle is James' second wife, Mary (Zoleman) Lunt ( she is not my
grandmother). Fern
Stahl is the left of Myrtle Stahl. The young girl at the bottom is Dorothy
Stahl and the little boy is Kenny Stahl. The woman to the right of Mary (Zoleman)
Lunt is Myrtle May Ferguson.
Judith adds: "
I believe that that is Myrtle Mae Ferguson's mother (Ethel Lunt Ferguson)
and father (Robert Ferguson) on the right, and the two men, kneeling are
Myrtle's brothers, Robert Eugene Ferguson and George Warren Ferguson, but
I don't know which is which.
The older woman, also in the
photo of Wayne Burns' christening in 1942 on the
Sargeant Album
page, could be Robert Ferguson's mother." |

Judith says: "Yes,
that is Andrew Stahl (second from top left), Myrtle (Lunt) Stahl is
holding Kenny. The girl to the left of Andrew is their daughter, Fern
Stahl. The little girl with the blonde curly hair must be their other
daughter, Dorothy Stahl. Andrew had one brother and two sisters, who I am
assuming are in the picture with their spouses."
|
Possibly Dorothy Stahl, Christmas, USA, 1940s |
From
the “Suburban Economist”, Cook County, Illinois, Jan 17, 1943: “The
betrothal of Fern Stahl and Roy Anderson is announced by Miss Stahl's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew G. Stahl, 8003 Racine Ave. Mr. Anderson will be...” The
online version of the article is truncated - I
assume Roy Anderson was going to war, but he returned safely, and he and Fern
had four children from 1945 onwards.
The unidentified girls in
the two photos lower left and
right are probably from Chicago, as Denise's granddaughter Lori Mankowski says
they are not Denise McGeachie from Buffalo, NY, as originally thought. Judith
Dolanski now thinks they are of Fern Stahl, born 1923 and Dorothy Stahl, born
1927, daughters of Andrew Stahl and Myrte Lunt. For more pictures, see The Sargeant Family Album.

The airman bridegroom is identified below the photo
as John McGeachie, and he is a sergeant in the USAAF 8th Air Force. However, Judith Dolanski does not think that the
couple
are
John McGeachie and his wife Alice Marie Bosack, based on the
high school photos she found on Ancestry, see Fraser Photos USA,
and also the other photos of them above - her parents had
a copy of the same photo, but the happy couple were not identified! Judith
has now identified them as her father's first cousin Dorothy Jean Stahl
and her husband Frank E. Stout Jr., see the Sargeant
album.

call up papers and had to report in two days later. Having been in the TA he
was one of the first to get his papers. No one in those uncertain days knew
where he was likely to have to go. They paid for a special licence in order to
marry within 7 days. They had been engaged for a long time and were saving to
marry, but remember that in those days female school teachers could not marry
and continue to teach. Another life!!!"

married John Peter Bonnesen (1877-1966) in Chicago on 27 Jun 1904. They must have divorced
before 1918 because on the 1940 Census John was living in Nickerson, Kansas, with a new wife Flossie
and sons Emery (21) and George (19). John died in Wichita, Kansas, in 1966, so the
Fraser family
story that Frank married a widow with two daughters is only partially
true. Rose's children were John Peter (1906-06); Catherine Vernette (1907-08);
Roselyn Marie Caroline "Bonnie" (1909-99, married Daniel Larkin) and Phyllis
Elizabeth (1911-84, married
Peter Rollinger). Rose's 1971 obituary is for Rose Holland "beloved wife of
the late John, mother of Bonnie Larkin and Phyllis Rollinger, grandmother of
Ronald Larkin and Robert Hulfish, and great-grandmother of
three". Rose married John
Holland before 1937 because when her mother Caroline Lehn died in 1937 the
informant was her daughter Rose Holland.
